The Year of the Monkey

Happy Chinese New Year! Accutone wishes everyone a healthy and prosperous year of the Monkey!

Since today is the first day of the Chinese New Year, let's take a closer look at the most important time of the year for all Chinese people everywhere.

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, has more than 4,000 years of history. It is the grandest and the most important annual event for Chinese people. It is defined to be the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar. Unlike the Christian New Year, which is based on a solar calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on a traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar whose date indicates both the moon phase and the time of the solar year.

Every year it is fascinating to see how people from different areas of the country fight and push their way back to their hometown or village just to spend time with their family and friends for the festival. The dedication it takes are overwhelming, I have heard many stories, about their way back home. From quitting their job because they weren’t allowed to extend their holiday longer, to walking miles and miles bare foot with bags and bags of goods for their relatives and lining up days after days just in hope to catch on a train ride back home. At the end of the day it is all about spending quality time with your loved ones.

Known for following festive rituals, there are a lot of rituals to celebrate the New Year. Red firecrackers, red clothing and red pocket are just few of the “red stuff” you will see over one of the most important holiday of the Chinese culture. Some interesting rituals, is the “cleaning day”, usually a few days before the new year people will do a complete cleaning of the house, throwing away all the old stuff and preparing for a clean and fresh start. After the cleaning, people will decorate the house to welcome the New Year.

Most of the decorations are red in color and lucky phrases will be hung on doors and walls welcoming better fortune and luck. After decorating the house, next is to gather all the family members and relatives and have a New Year dinner to celebrate for the upcoming year, usually every family will prepare a big feast. After the dinner, the next activity is going to the New Year market; a temporary market will be setup to mainly selling New Year goods, such as clothing, fireworks, decorations, food, and small arts. The market is usually decorated with a large amount of lanterns and opens until late midnight before closing comes first day of the year.
